A candid discussion about hugging in the workplace

A candid discussion about hugging in the workplaceA candid discussion about hugging in the workplaceFortunately, we live in an era where mora people finally feel comfortable speaking up about unwanted winzigkeit and situations that make them uncomfortable. Conversations are being sparked by news from Hollywood, politics, and workplaces, as well as more casual encounters with family and friends. This leads many to askIs there any place for physical touch in the workplace?Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWe believe thereisa role for appropriate touch in work-oriented relationships.Early in our research, we found that less than 1% of employees choose Physical Touch as their primary appreciation language and it is the most frequently chosen the least liked language. But Dr. Chapman and I chose to include physical touch in the appreciation languages for two primary reasons.First, alth ough there are clearly significant challenges, we didnt want to advocate atouchless societyevenintheworkplace. Appropriate physical touch in the proper context can be extremely meaningful. In a recentAtlantic article, developmental psychologist Tiffany Field argued that, As we get more isolated, we need platonic touch more than ever, even if we dont realize it. A vicious cycle is happening, wherein the less people initiate, the more abnormal it seems when someone does, and the more likely it is to be upsetting.Secondly, physical touch happens naturally in the workplace, largely as a demonstration of spontaneous celebration a high five when you complete a project, a fist bump when a problem is solved, or a congratulatory handshake when a major sale is closed. (For a general discussion of the appreciation language of Physical Touch, read more here.)Hugs need further discussionHugs, however, require another level of consideration. Recently, I was invited as an expert to participate in a media discussion about hugging (this was after significant attention given to hugging by public figures in professional relationships.) The discussion was interesting , but people largely focused on their personal preferences. I dont want anyone outside of my family touching me, let alone hugging me Or, Im a hugger that is the way I show affection, even to friends. We can clearly affirm that there are cultural, dezentral and personal differences with regards to the acceptability of hugging, and the settings and types of relationships which frame the parameters. The acceptability of a hug varies greatly from one person to the next. The core issue, really, is not whether it is right or wrong to hug or even am I ok with hugging? Rather, the key question to ask (and answer)What is the purpose of a hug? In actuality, there are avarietyof potential purposes for hugs in work-based relationships. Hugs can be a way to show warmth (Im happy to see you), affection (You are truly important to me) and gratitude (Thank yousomuch for all youve done for me.) But we must balance the warmth and respect we want to show someone with the boundaries of whats appropriate. There may be alternative actions which could be done to convey the same message desired by the person who wants to give a hug to someone else.In the case of hugging, the recipient gets to define whats best for them. Hugging is not for everyone and it can make some people extremely uncomfortable. Each person gets to define how much personal space they want, and it is important to remember that some people have been victims of physical or sexual abuse.Understanding that other people are different than youThe premise of both the Love Languages and Languages of Appreciation, is knowing your language and also realizing that other people prefer other languages. To successfully communicate love or appreciation, you have to do it inthe language (and actions) most valuable to the recipient. This is an important reminder that its not about whatyouwant. The fact that you are a hugger or that you need a hug is not a sufficient reason to ignore someone elses wish not to be touched. So, how do we find balance in the workplace? The first step is to accept the premise that the recipient of a physical gesture isalwaysthe person who has the authority to determine what is an acceptable form of physical touch to them. When in doubt, ask first.Exclaiming, I am so happy for you and asking, May I give you a hug? is more appropriate than exclaiming, I am so happy for you while simultaneously giving them a hug, and then stating, Sorry, I couldnt help myself - Im just naturally a huggerTalking about touch and especially hugging ahead of time is important. The responsibility seems to fall especially to those individuals on both ends of the spectrum. For those who do not want to be touched (or specifically, hugged) by colleagues, you should take the initiative and say something like Ive observed you seem fairly comforta ble with hugs, but I need to let you know that hugging feels uncomfortable to me and I would request you honor that boundary for me. For those who are huggers, you would be wise to have a conversation with your coworkers and state I grew up in a family and culture where hugging was a normal part of life, and often giving a hug is a natural response for me. I want to respect everyones boundaries and will try to think before I act, but if I happen to slip and make a mistake, please let me know.An important next step is tofigure out and use other ways to communicate warmth like greeting someone warmly with a smile, looking the person in the eyes, shaking their hand, accompanied by a enthusiastic, Im so happy to meet you (or whatever the appropriate verbal communication is.)ConclusionPhysical touch in the workplace can bebothvery positive and healthy, andextremely unhealthy and damaging, depending on the individuals involved, the types of touch, and the cultural context. This fact, I bel ieve, contributes to the strongly held beliefs on both sides of the issue. And, given the individual and cultural differences involved, both perspectives are equally valid. Hence, the dilemma (and discussion) about physical touch in the workplace will probably continue.Note ALWAYS make sure you know your companys policy on touch and physical interaction in the workplace. If you are unsure, check with your supervisor or Human Resources Officer to make sure you fully understand the legal boundaries laid out by your employer. This article originally appeared on Appreciation at Work. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How to network without feeling like youre doing it

How to network without feeling like youre doing itHow to network without feeling like youre doing itHeres an easy way to turn dreaded employment networking into deadly effective bondingWhen youre networking, ask for a reference, elend a job.Whether youre doing catch-up drinks or grabbing lunch to reconnect, your primary need is to get an ally, not a tally of job listings. Recruiting a helping hand to your search is your goal.So dont ask your college friend if she knows of any jobs for people like you. How would she?And dont ask your boss from two jobs ago if she has the names of any people who are currently looking to hire somebody like you. It puts her on the spot. Uncomfortably. No, instead, ask for a reference. Mention that youre going to be moving on, or youre already looking, or that youre actively out on the street. Let them know the type of positions you are and are not suited for, and what youre hoping to achieve in your next opportunity. And then ask them if when it gets to t hat happy place in your search if it would be OK to use them as a reference.By not putting them on the spot about specific job openings, you reduce the awkwardness inherent in the networking conversation. And by letting them know that you hold them in high enough esteem to potentially use them as a reference, youre actually paying them a compliment.Youre also making it easier for them to say yes, and to feel good about themselves for being a good friend and helping you out with a little favor. All of which means that you have a new buddy in your search one whos going to be thinking about keeping an eye out for new opportunities and an ear open for fresh possibilities for their reference-able friend you.Its wins and grins all around. Now, this doesnt work for just any old person you meet on the street. Theres probably a pretty good match between people youd take to lunch and those you could ask to be a reference. So my advice would be to stick to asking those you know well enough.Bein g realistic, the widely offered and deeply wrong advice from the past decade that you should try to extract favors, concessions, names, jobs, and career assistance from people youve only met over the phone is not only useless, it can be counterproductive to your aims by antagonizing your broader network.By making your networking about compliments, youll find it pays dividends.Good luck in the search this week

A Checklist for Success When You Hire Employees

A Checklist for Success When You Hire Employees A Checklist for Success When You Hire Employees Want to recruit and hire a superior workforce? This checklist for hiring employees will help you systematize your process for hiring, whether its your first employee or one of many employees that you are hiring. This checklist helps you keep track of your recruiting efforts. This hiring checklist communicates both the recruiting and the hiring process and progress in recruiting to the hiring manager. Your feedback and comments are welcome to improve this checklist for hiring employees. 1:09 Watch Now: 6 Ways to Hire the Right People Checklist for Hiring Employees Determine the need for a new or replacement position.Think creatively about how to accomplish the work without adding staff (improve processes, eliminate work you don’t need to do, divide work differently, and so forth).Hold a recruiting planning meeting with the recruiter, the HR leader, the hiring manager, and, potentially, a coworker or internal customer.Develop and prioritize the key requirements needed for the position and the special qualifications, traits, characteristics, and experience you seek in a candidate. (These will assist your Human Resources department to write the classified ad; post the job online and on your website, and screen resultant resumes for potential candidate interviews.) With HR department assistance, develop the job description for the position.Determine the salary range for the position.Decide whether the department can afford to hire an employee to fill the position.Post the position internally on the job opportunities bulletin board in your lunchroom and on your company intranet for one week. If you anticipate having difficulty finding a qualified internal candidate for the position, then state in the posting that you are advertising the position externally at the same time. Send an all-company email to notify staff that a position has been posted and that you are hiring employees. All staff members should encourage talented, qualified, diverse internal candidates to apply for the position. (If you are the hiring supervisor, as a courtesy, let the current supervisor know if you are talking to his or her reporting staff member.)Interested internal candidates fill out the Internal Position Application.Schedule an interview, for internal candidates, with the hiring supervisor, the manager of the hiring supervisor or a customer of the position and HR. (In all cases, tell the candidates the timelines you anticipate the interview process will take.) Hold the interviews with each interviewer clear about their role in the interview process. (Cultural fit, technical qualifications, customer responsiveness, and knowledge are several of the screening responsibilities you may want your interviewers to assume.)Interviewers fill out the Job Candidate Evaluation Form.If no internal candidates are selected for the position, make certain that you clearly communicate with the applicants that they were not selected.  Whenever possible, provide feedback that will help the employee continue to develop their skill and qualifications. Use this feedback as an opportunity to help the employee continue to grow their career. If an internal candidate is selected for the position, make a written job offer that includes the new job description and salary.Agree on a transition timeline with the internal candidate’s current supervisor. If youve created another internal opening, begin again.End the search. If no qualified internal candidates apply, extend the search to external candidates, if you didnt advertise the position simultaneously. Develop your candidate pool of diverse applicants.Spread word-of-mouth information about the positions availability in your industry and to each employee’s social and real-world network of friends and associates. Network and post jobs on online social media sites such as Twitter and LinkedIn. Ask your employees to publicize the position through their online social media networks.Place a classified ad in online and offline newspapers with a delivery reach that will create a diverse candidate pool.Recruit online. Post the classified ad on jobs boards and newspaper-related websites including your own company recruiting website.Post the position on professional association websites.Talk to university career centers and attend career days. Contact temporary help agencies.Brainstorm other potential ways to locate a well-qualified pool of candidates for each position.Through your recruiting efforts, youve developed a pool of candidates. People are applying for your open job. Whether you have developed a candidate pool in advance of the job opening or you are searching for an employee from scratch, the development of a qualified pool of candidates is crucial.Send emails to each applicant to acknowledge receipt of the resume. Simply acknowledge your receipt of their application. Make no other statements. (Qualifiers such as the following were once popular with employers, but they open you up to the possibility of legal problems down the road: If the candidate appears to be a good match for the position, relative to your other applicants, you will contact them to schedule an interview. If not, you will keep their application/resume on file for a year in case other opportunities arise.) Once you have developed a number of applicants for the position, screen resumes and/or applications against the prioritized qualifications and criteria established. Note that resume cover letters matter as you screen potential employees.Create a short list of applicants after the hiring manager and Human Resources staff review the applications that they have received for a particular job.Phone screen the short list of candidates whose credentials look like a good fit ?for the position. Determine candidate salary requirements, if not stated with the application, as requested. (Note that an increasing number of jurisdictions across the US are making this practice illegal, so know the laws where you work.) Schedule qualified candidates, whose salary needs you can afford, for a first interview with the hiring supervisor and an HR representative, either in-person or on the phone. In all cases, tell the candidates the timeline you anticipate the interview process will take.Ask the candidate to fill out your official job application, upon their arrival for the interview.Give the candidate a copy of the job description to review.Hold screening interviews during which the candidate is assessed and has the opportunity to learn about your organization and your needs. Fill out the Job Candidate Evaluation Form for each candidate interviewed.Meet to determine which (if any) candidates to invite back for a second interview.Determine the appropriate people participating in the second round of interviews. This may include potential coworkers, customers, the hiring supervisor, the hiring supervisor’s manager and HR. Only include people who will have an impact on the hiring decision.Schedule the additional interviews.Hold the second round of interviews with each interviewer clear about their role in the interview process. (Culture fit, technical qualifications, customer responsiveness, and knowledge are several of the screening responsibilities you may want your interviewers to assume.) Candidates participate in any testing you may require for the position.Interviewers fill out the candidate rating form.HR checks the finalists’ (people to whom you are considering offering the position) credentials, references, background check, and other qualifying documents and statements.Anyone who has stated qualifications dishonestly or who fails to pass the background checks is eliminated as a candidate.Through the entire interviewing process, HR, and managers, where desired, stay in touch with the most qualified candidates via phone and email. Reach consensus on whether the organization wants to select any candidate (via informal discussion, a formal discussion meeting, HR staff touching base with interviewers, candidate rating forms, and so on). If dissension exists, the supervising manager should make the final decision. If no candidate is superior, start again to review your candidate pool and redevelop a pool if necessary.HR and the hiring supervisor agree on the offer to make to the candidate, with the concurrence of the supervisor’s manager and the departmental budget. (Always consider these factors before you make a job offer.) Talk informally with the candidate about whether he or she is interested in the job at the offered salary and stated conditions. Make certain the candidate agrees that they will participate in a background check, a drug screen and sign a Non-compete Agreement or a Confidentiality Agreement, depending on the position.  (This should have been signed off on when filling out the job application.) If so, proceed with an offer letter. You can also make the job offer contingent on certain checks. If not, determine if negotiable factors exist that will bring the organization and the candidate into an agreement. A reasonable negotiation is expected; a candidate that returns repeatedly to the company requesting more each time is not a candidate the company wants to hire. If the informal negotiation leads the organization to believe the candidate is viable, HR will prepare a written position offer letter from the supervisor that offers the position, states and formalizes the salary, reporting relationship, supervising relationships, and any other benefits or commitments the candidate has negotiated or the company has promised. The offer letter, the job description, and the Company Non-Compete or Confidentiality Agreement are provided to the candidate. The candidate signs the offer letter  documentation to accept the job or refuses the position. If yes, schedule the new employees start date. Pursue welcoming the new employee from the minute they accept your job offer. If no, start again to review your candidate pool and redevelop a pool if necessary.

Here are steps to curb your toxic perfectionism

Here are steps to curb your toxic perfectionism Here are steps to curb your toxic perfectionism I’m a recovering perfectionist. It’s true. In high school I was known to stay up until 2 am doing homework, dreading the prospect of turning in anything less than my absolute best. In college that turned into pulling all-nighters. And when I started my own business, especially one as personal as Bossed Up, my work product felt like a personal reflection of  who I am.  But my work isn’t my worth.  I’ve had to learn that over the years in order to free myself from the perils of perfectionism, which make you less willing to try new things, experiment, and frankly, grow!I sat down with  Bossed Up Trainer Team  member and career coach  Lisa Lewis, who knows a thing or two about helping her clients shift gears from compulsive perfectionistic behaviors to healthy striving instead.Emilie Aries: How can you tell the difference between working hard and taking pride in your efforts versus being a perfectionist?Lisa Lewis:  You’ll know the difference between being a hard worker and bei ng a perfectionist by the presence of two things: a level of “enough-ness” in your work product, and compassion towards yourself. If you can work your booty off to do a great job and step away from the work feeling satisfied - and can also be gentle with yourself about the potential imperfections that may still have slipped through - you’re a hard worker. But if you beat yourself up because you’re trying to achieve robot-levels of perfection, you’re not in the healthy zone anymore.Hard workers can step away from their end product and be satisfied with their accomplishments. Perfectionists tend to hold themselves to such high standards that they’ll never get there. So they feel a looming sense of dissatisfaction, anxiety, disappointment, or anger at themselves even when they’ve given their best effort.Emilie: Do women and girls struggle with perfectionism more than men and boys? If so, why do you think that is?Lisa:  The  research  from the last 20 years around perfect ionism and gender identity is fascinating.  Study  participants identifying as female show consistently higher levels of stress, conscientiousness and perfectionistic behaviors than men. So on average, the data indicates that it isn’t all in our heads: women really do struggle more with perfectionism than men. From either the way our genes are encoded or the way that  women are socialized, we’re very sensitive to what others are thinking, which might be why we create a critical voice inside of us that demands impossibly high performance standards and creates the stress that’s a hallmark of perfectionism. It’s also probably why other issues that show up for women more than men are related to how we’re perceived by others: eating disorders, procrastination, lack of self-confidence, depression, and anxiety.Emilie: As a habitual overachiever myself, I used to feel like perfectionism was a harmless, victimless crime. But what are the risks of always striving for perfect?Lisa:  I hear you!  But striving for perfect absolutely comes at a personal cost: it makes it harder to be satisfied with your work product (or even yourself)! That means that your baseline happiness on a daily basis is starting from  a lower place. And, in order to bring your happiness back up where you want it, society doesn’t give you a whole lot of great options outside of your own brain: you might turn to less-healthy ways to comfort yourself like food, substance abuse, or compulsive over-exercising to get the endorphin hit you need to feel happier. And perfectionism isn’t a victimless crime, either! When your first response to someone complimenting your work is, “Well, I messed up XYZ,” you’re taking someone’s attempt to create connection with you and telling them that their opinion is wrong. Do that enough, and you’re bound to create distance and separation from coworkers, friends, and family. Which then leads to feeling isolated, not valued, and can spiral into anxiety a nd depression.Emilie: How can you begin to overcome perfectionism?Lisa:  You can often tell a perfectionist from their black-and-white, all-or-nothing thinking, so it’s easy to assume that if you’ve fallen victim to perfectionist thoughts once, you’re a lost cause. However, overcoming the debilitating parts of perfectionism  is  possible! It’s a bit like developing a new muscle at the gym, so imagine that your brain’s new workout regimen involves practice with lifting new mental weights. Retraining habitual thought patterns isn’t always quick, but the results can be totally profound. To start, we have to remember that your perfectionism and super high standards are a product of your integrity - which we want you to keep! However, we want your instinct towards integrity to be in check with reality, too. So the first step to developing new thought patterns is to acknowledge that when striving for success starts to spiral out of control, it’s coming from a good place. You can be kind to yourself about it! Perfectionists are great at being mad at themselves about imperfections, so we have to start from a place that isn’t angry to be able to change things.Once you notice your perfectionism is going into overdrive, your next step is to say: if anyone else was working on this, has the work already been done to a reasonably high standard here? (This is where we’re inviting reality to be a part of the conversation.) This is a great place to ask a friend, coworker, or supervisor if you don’t feel like you can trust your brain. This is exactly the time when you can learn to take a compliment: if your boss says it’s great as it is, believe them!Another place perfectionism can crop up is in preventing you from starting something new, because you’re afraid you won’t do it perfectly. This is a great place to invite reality into the conversation: would it be realistic (or fair) to expect anyone else on the planet to start this new project and do it w ithout making a single mistake? If not, you can adopt a “beginner mindset” and look for ways that you can treat your new project as an opportunity for growth and learning rather than a place to have to hit certain performance standards. The more ways you allow yourself to play and explore, the more you’ll move past the paralysis that perfectionism often creates.Emilie: What does healthy striving look like in contrast to perfectionism?Lisa:  The two things that are hallmarks of hard workers who don’t wrestle with perfectionism are having a point of “enough-ness,” and giving themselves compassion. Those are great starting points to develop a healthier sense of achievement. When you start a new project, make a decision before you begin about what constitutes “enough” for you. Is it a certain amount of time invested? A specific number of rounds of edits? A particular type of feedback? A budget? Create boundaries about how far a project can expand before you call it a day and step away from the work. Then, once you lay out your boundaries for when enough is enough, you’ve gotta extend yourself some grace. Boundaries are only effective if they’re enforced, and they can only be enforced if you give yourself permission to quit (and compassion when you do). So let yourself do the best you can within the constraints you laid out, and then call it a day. Pat yourself on the back for what you did, and give yourself some sympathy for what you weren’t able to do.Let yourself learn from these lessons for next time, instead of obsessing over applying these lessons now and burning yourself out. Remember: this is all a practiced skill, so you won’t get it 100% right 100% of the time. (I know, it’s a perfectionist’s nightmare!) But the road to perfectionism recovery is paved with extending yourself lots of empathy and understanding.Do you struggle with perfectionism? How can you shift your approach towards healthy striving instead? Share your experience in the comments below, boss! And learn more from Lisa Lewis at  LisaLewisCareers.comThis article was originally published on BossedUp.

How to train yourself to see food as fuel

How to train yourself to see food as fuel How to train yourself to see food as fuel For about as long as I can remember, I’ve had a complicated relationship with food. My grandparents, all children of the Depression era, taught my siblings and I to never waste food - if it was on the table, it was to be eaten (My grandpa spent years of his childhood unsure of when his next meal would be - he was raised to eat accordingly, and it was a practice he somewhat-unintentionally passed along to his grandchildren). While I was raised to be a member of the Clean Your Plate Club, it definitely wasn’t a struggle for me - I loooove food. For my entire life, great meals have been a means of celebration, an expression of love, and a facet of life around which to gather. I’m very lucky - I’ve never gone hungry, and I’ve tried and enjoyed a lot of amazing food - I do not take that for granted. All that being said, though, I’ve also had my fair share of body image issues, and there has been many a time in which I’ve wished I didn’t enjoy food and eating so much. I’ve been known to eat emotionally, to eat too much in celebration or in sadness. I succumb to my period cravings, and I’ve genuinely never met a bowl of queso I didn’t love. I work out 5-6 days a week, but I’ve always wanted to have a healthy enough relationship with food to not overindulge just because I exercise. Like I said - complicated. These conflicting feelings beg a few questions: Is it possible to love food AND love your body? What SHOULD I be eating that tastes good but that also feeds my body? How can I help myself to create a healthier relationship with food - something every human being literally needs to stay alive?I talked to Ellie Rome, a certified health and wellness coach, to learn more about how to train yourself to view food as what it truly is - fuel for our body and its many incredible functions.First off, we want to switch our mindset to seeing food as fuel. What practices or changes should we adopt? The first step is to simply bring awareness to WHY you are reaching for food.  â€œAm I actually hungry?” “Why am I reaching for food?”    Are two of the most powerful questions when it comes to changing your relationship with food. The food you fuel yourself with is EVERYTHING. From your energy, your mood, your skin, to your personality, all of it starts with what is on the end of your fork. You get to choose how good you feel, and learning which foods work for your unique body is essential for optimal performance in every area of life. Honor where you are, and start to tune in. The best fuel for you may not be the same as your best friend’s or your mom. What I help my clients figure out as quickly as possible is what is right for their unique bodies. There are so many foods commonly deemed as “healthy” that can actually drain your energy, make you hold onto weight, and bring your body down. Many foods also have addictive properties like sugar  and carbs that can bring about self-destructive eating habits. One of the best ways to break free from these foods is through mindfulness practice,  elimination, and reintroduction protocols. This is what I work on with my clients one-on-one, and it leads to massive transformations in their health and relationships with food. What nutrients should I be sure to get every single day?Focus on balancing your plate with fiber, healthy fat, and protein.  You can get your fiber from lots of vegetables; protein from sources like sustainably raised meats, organic eggs, nuts, and seeds; and healthy fats from sources like avocado oil, olives, and coconut oil.Greens, greens, greens! If you have difficulty getting your veggies in throughout the day with a busy schedule or without time for meal prep, you can get a  powdered organic green supplement  to add to a protein shake or water in the mornings. How much water do I really need to drink every day?Your minimum target should be half of your body weight in ounces a day, but shoot for your full body weight in ounces.  So if you weigh 140 lbs, your minimum target should be 70 ounces, and aim for 140 ounces.Do I need extra calories on days I exercise? It depends on you and the intensity of the exercise. I recommend tuning in to your own hunger signals and energy levels.Ideally on days without exercise for a general protocol, shoot for three balanced meals a day and minimize snacking. Allow 4-6 hours between meals, so your body can tap into your fat stores for energy. If you are getting hungry in between, it is a good sign to add more healthy fat, fiber, and protein at your meals. Depending on how you feel, you may need a pre or post-workout meal which wouldn’t count into the three meals per day.Do I need extra protein on days I exercise? This depends on what type of exercise and the intensity of exercise, as well as your personal health goals. If you are doing vigorous exercise or have body-building goals, increasing your protein intake may be necessary. I work with my clients to customize their persona lized targets based on their goals and specific goals for health, mind, and body. Can I really eat extra carbs after cardio?I love this question as it allows us to open up to a re-frame! Changing the mentality of “earning carbs or earning extra calories” by working out. Release the old mentality of trying to exercise our way out of an unhealthy diet. It does not work, as it is so much more than calories in=calories out. The quality of your food, as mentioned earlier, is EVERYTHING. Fueling yourself with the right foods is going to give you the energy and fuel to WANT to move your body.As we change our relationship with food, it is a beautiful release when you can allow yourself to have whatever you desire, but the key is tuning in to what those true desires are. What you ACTUALLY want for your best self. So instead of the “Can I really eat X, Y, Z?” or “Did I earn a cookie, because I just ran five miles?” Let’s reframe the question to, “Is it optimal for my body and e nergy to choose healthy, higher-carb options after cardio?” or “What does my body need post-cardio workout?”For this re-framed question, it again depends on the intensity and quality of the exercise and listening to your body. You may not need a post-workout meal or snack if you are getting enough nutrients at your meals and/or your workout wasn’t too intense to require the extra carbohydrates. Pay attention to how you feel. You may have to experiment and notice if you feel any fogginess, fatigue, or slow recovery time. These are all signs you may need to add additional carbs after your cardio workouts. In general, if you are going to eat higher carb meals or snacks, after cardio is a more optimal time because following intense exercise, your muscles are able to use those carbs, but choose nutrient-dense carb sources (like sweet potato, butternut squash, apples, or coconut flour) and pair them with protein (like adding nuts, healthy jerky, almond butter, etc.).Does the amoun t of water I need change depending on my workout?Yes! If you are doing vigorous exercise and sweating a lot like with hot yoga, outdoor running, boot camps, etc., you definitely need to add additional water. These are the days you should meet your target of full body weight in ounces. How does caffeine play into my energy levels? Does caffeine help or hurt a workout? This is totally dependent on the person. Moderate amounts of caffeine can be great for some people and healthy in the right amounts. However, using caffeine to force yourself to work out when you are exhausted or drained is counterintuitive and leads to high levels of cortisol (our stress hormone), which puts lots of stress on the body, promotes adrenal fatigue, and can lead to lower energy, hormone imbalance, weight gain, and slow recovery times.Sleep and rest are number one. Moving your body is important, but honor your sleep and tune into what your body is calling for. What’s your best snack solution for that 3pm slum p?My best solution for 3pm slump snack is to avoid it all together! How to do this?ENERGIZING BREAKFAST AND LUNCHEat nutrient-dense breakfast and lunch that won’t put you on the blood sugar roller coaster. Include healthy fat, fiber, and protein and minimize carbs and sugar.WATERMake sure you are drinking enough water throughout your day. This is CRUCIAL for energy, weight loss, and avoiding food cravings. Shoot for half your body weight in ounces per day. So if you are 140 lbs, at minimum should be getting 70 ounces of water per day.MOVEMENTMoving throughout our day is an amazing way to beat that 3pm slump. Even just getting up and taking 250 steps each hour, as tracked in most Fitbits, is so beneficial to your energy, immune system, and overall well-being, (especially if you can get those steps in the sun!). Embrace movement to keep things flowing and flushed out.Release perfectionism or the all-or-none mentality. Even five minutes of movement are better than none. IF you can’ t fit in an hour work out, try to fit in little bursts throughout your day! You can plan a walk after lunch as well to help digestion and to get your energy back up.But if you are still experiencing that 3pm slump and looking for energy or a snack:Choose a healthy, balanced snack that isn’t going to give you a quick hit of energy followed by an even worse crash, (like a sugary Coke, candy bar, pretzels, or bag of chips). Find something with protein, healthy fat, and fiber, like apples with almond butter, or some nuts with dairy-free dark chocolate (70% or greater cacao content).Other great options are grainless, dairy-free protein bars that aren’t loaded with sugar (Ideally 15 g) and have a good amount of fiber (Ideally 3g), like an RX bar, or some grainless crackers (like Flackers with Kite Hill Dairy Free Cream cheese!).This article was originally published on TheEverygirl.com.

Software Developer Gets Fast Results from Resume

Software Developer Gets Fast Results from Resume Software Developer Gets Fast Results from Resume Joshua Axelrod landed a job interview from his professional network but needed a speedy resume rewrite to cinch the IT Job.As a software developer, Joshua Axelrod is rarely one to do things backward. Sure he might have to focus on backward compatibility or reverse-engineer some technology, but he typically likes to keep things straightforward. However, when Axelrod came to Donald Burns, a certified professional resume writer who works with Ladders, to help rewrite his resume, he did so after he had already lined up an job interview.“He had it in reverse order,” Burns said. “Usually, a priority is to write the resume to get an interview. But he already had an interview set up through his contacts and he needed a resume.”Axelrod had not touched his resume in nearly four years. When he was laid off in November from his position as director of program management and online operations at a well-known magazine, he knew it was time to rewrite his resume, but he didn’t have the chan ce before he got his first job interview.“My network immediately started coming through for me,” Axelrod said. After a preliminary interview with one prospective employer went very well, he was invited to come back and interview again with upper management. And they would need to see his resume when he came for the interview.Axelrod had only a week to spare, so he contacted TechnologyLadder and Burns to help deliver the resume that would sell him to the employer.“He needed it done pretty quickly and we completed it within a week, which is pretty good,” Burns said. “I’ve actually done them in one day, but you pay extra for that â€" a lot extra. I always figure we need a little time to let the thing settle â€" to be able to come back to it later and look at it anew to catch any errors.”Axelrod’s wealth of experience in software development and the similarities between Axelrod’s target position and the one he had held at the magazine made Burns’ job that much easier .“He had worked in the same industry for a number of years, and he had progressed and won a number of awards,” Burns said. “So it was easy to show advancement and progression in his career.”The only minor complication: Axelrod had run his own Web design and development company for a few years. “Sometimes that’s a little hard to work up and verify on a resume,” Burns said of entrepreneurs and self-employment.But the finished product delivered results. Not only did the resume impress the employer who first requested a resume, it caught the eye of a second. “I have two offers on the table right now and a third company is asking me to ‘bear with them’ while they work through some deals,” Axelrod said. “I’m facing the best kind of problem right now!”

9 Easy Resume Updates That Can Help You Stand Out

9 Easy Resume Updates That Can Help You Stand Out 9 Easy Resume Updates That Can Help You Stand Out Ready to create a more effective resume? Boosting it  doesn’t always mean completely overhauling. In fact, simple resume updates  oftentimes can lead to big payoffs. Consider these nine easy-to-implement resume updates to stand out from the competition: 1. Get rid of lackluster skills and ancient accomplishments. Provide plenty of room for your awesome credentials to shine by ridding your resume of out-of-date entries. Touting Web surfing ability and basic competency in Microsoft Word doesn’t particularly enthuse 21st-century employers. And unless you’re a fairly recent high school grad, move on to showcasing achievements beyond those glory days. 2. Shake up the order. Speaking of education, consider placing that section lower on the page. While employers do care about your post-secondary education, your job experience from the last few years is usually more relevant and thus should be presented right off the bat. 3. Give important skills their due. Worried certain qualifications will get lost among other statements? Highlight the most pertinent ones in their own section. Someone applying for an IT job, for instance, may want a header entitled “Software Skills” followed by a descriptive list. 4. Include volunteer experience. In a study of decision-makers, 82 percent said they are more likely to choose a candidate with volunteering experience. However, these hiring professionals also reported seeing volunteer experience listed on only 30 percent of the resumes they receive. Don’t miss out on this way to demonstrate leadership, compassion, and transferable skills. 5. Add metrics. “Data speaks volumes,” says career advisor and greyzone founder Tami Palmer. “Whenever possible, talk about the percentage you increased revenue or saved expenditures. Convey specific details. Don’t have it? Start recording it now for future updates!” (For even more impact, use actual numbers rather than write them out. A scanning eye will be more likely to stop and read when seeing “50%” on a resume rather than “fifty percent.”) 6. “Liven” things up. Live hyperlinks provide a convenient way for the hiring manager to learn more about you or quickly establish contact. Make your email address, LinkedIn profile, and personal website clickable when submitting a resume electronically. 7. Be less “responsible.” And, for that matter, less “detail-oriented” too. Evaluate your resume to rid it of boring, overused words. Palmer notes that verbs such as “initiated,” “managed,” “created,” and “launched” pack a greater punch than constantly saying you were responsible for this or that duty. 8. Remove “References Available upon Request.” The phrase takes up room that could be devoted to showing why you’re the perfect person for the position. Employers who value references will ask for them without prompting. 9. Perform a final once-over. Introducing errors makes those great changes to your resume go for naught. Be sure to spell check, proofread, check tenses, and maintain a consistent format. A polished document shows that you’re a true professional worth an extended look! Looking for more resume help? How to Leverage Your Smartphone for the Job Search

How to Leverage Your Smartphone for the Job Search How to Leverage Your Smartphone for the Job Search Get ‘smart’ about your job search to turn your downtime into valuable job-search time.Have you noticed how just about everything in our world has gone mobile? You can deposit your checks without going to the bank, chat face-to-face with loved ones far away, and read books and magazines on-the-go without harming a single tree. Even the most brick-and-mortar businesses have developed mobile websites (and perhaps an app or two) to compete in today’s market. As job seekers, it’s important to embrace the mobile job search or get lost among the competition. Here are five tips to make the most of your smartphone for the job search.Search and vet job listingsIf you’re using a website to search for job listings, download its accompanying app so you can access and vet job postings on-the-go. For instance, Ladders’ app, ” Ladders by Ladders,” allows job seekers to identify job matches on-the-go, discover new job opportunities and retrieve information on your competition. Instead of searching by keyword, this app delivers tailored matches based on your profile, experience and career goals. The listings refresh every time you open the app, ensuring you’re looking at the newest job posts.Beat the 72-hour windowA recent study by Ladders found that the longer you wait to apply to a job, the less likely it is to receive a call back. If you are a good fit for a role, apply to the position within the first 72 hours of the job’s posting. Your smart phone is a great way to help you stay ahead of this 72-hour deadline.Research your networkYou can also access your social networks like Facebook  and LinkedIn  to determine if you know someone from a target employer. Use these apps on your smartphone to do the research and reach out to your connections. Your contact can provide valuable insight in to the company, helping you determine if the job is worth an application. Additionally, studies have shown you’re 10 times more likely to land an interview when your app lication is accompanied by an employee referral.Begin the application processYou can save yourself a lot of time by sifting through opportunities while on-the-go and flagging the ones that merit an application. You can then craft the perfect cover letter and tweak your resume appropriately when you’re in front of a computer. Additionally, many positions allow you to begin the application process by passing along your profile. In fact, with Ladders app you can save the position for later or tap an icon to “like” the position, which immediately sends an alert to the hiring manager with your profile.Be resume-readyBring your important job-search documents wherever you go. Use services like iCloud or Dropbox to store your resume, references or portfolio of work on multiple devices, including your smartphone or tablet. If a recruiter reaches out requesting your resume in the middle of the day, you can respond right away. You no longer have to wait until you’re back at home and in front of a computer.Take advantage of your smart devices to search on-the-go and during the workday, and never miss a beat in your job search.

7 Signs Youre Stuck in a Rut (and Need to Make a Change Today)

7 Signs You’re Stuck in a Rut (and Need to Make a Change Today) 7 Signs You’re Stuck in a Rut (and Need to Make a Change Today) Sometimes, it’s hard to notice when we’re  stuck  in a rut. You could go through the dull, numbing pain of everyday activities and not feel any  desire to change  anything. After all, as humans we have the amazing ability to  adapt and cope  with nearly any situation. The downside though, is that we get used to things that make us unhappy. Ideas or places we used to resist eventually become the same things we cling onto, not out of need or want, but out of familiarity. Here are some signs that you may be in a rut at work: 1. It’s Hard for You to Get Worked Up or Excited About Anything A  study by The Dana Foundation  showed how people who’re depressed perceive the world differently from others. When upbeat music was played, they were less likely to notice or become excited. Being stuck in a rut is like living in a muted world, where you see things in black and white rather than in vivid colors. Sometimes, it’s not our surroundings, but our perception that changes what the world looks like. 2. You Keep Reminiscing About the Past Everyone gets nostalgic from time to time. We like to think of pleasant, happy memories that evoke powerful emotions. But when those memories are used to substitute experiences in the present, it’s a sign that you’re stuck somewhere you don’t want to be. While it’s tempting to look at the past through rose-tinted glasses, remember that there are good and bad memories, and a lot more in between the two. Don’t let the past stall you in the present. 3. Your Health and Well-Being Aren’t a Priority When you just don’t care about anything, your inner thoughts get reflected on the outside as well. Maybe you stopped your daily exercise routine, you don’t care about your appearance, or you don’t bother eating healthily anymore. Falling into a rut is a gradual, downward spiral that affects all aspects of your life. By neglecting your well-being, you neglect all other aspects of your life. Bad experiences at work can carry over into our personal lives as well. If you haven’t been taking care of yourself lately, think about why that’s the case. 4. You Daydream About an Alternate Reality Escaping from time to time is perfectly fine and can be a good thing. Whether it’s by chatting with a co-worker, listening to good music, or finally getting away on vacation, doing something different helps break up our routine and lets us explore. But it may be time for bigger changes when you constantly think about being somewhere else rather than where you are right now. Be careful. Daydreaming too often can sabotage your long-term goals because it can act as a substitute for actually doing something to improve your situation. If you want to change your life, try to  change your environment. 5. You Don’t See the Purpose of Anything You Do Money alone isn’t a very good motivator. In order to enjoy any form of work, there needs to a sense that what you do is rewarding or stimulating at least. Ask yourself: Are you growing or learning new skills in the work you do? If you’re starting to feel stagnant, it’s time to look for new roles or take on new learning opportunities. There aren’t many things out there more frustrating than spinning your wheels in one spot. 6. You Find Yourself Feeling Unwell on a Regular Basis I once knew someone who was constantly suffering from stomach problems for nearly a year due to stress at work. After quitting, her stomach problems went away, and she has felt much better since then. Stress, unhappiness, or fatigue can cause us to feel physical pain, but we ignore them too often because we figure that illnesses can sort themselves out. Staying in a bad situation can deteriorate your health until it’s too late. 7. You Stay in a Situation Because You Believe There’s Nothing Else Out There It’s a poor excuse to get stuck somewhere because you don’t think there are any other alternatives. It becomes obvious when other people do it, yet we make all sorts of reasons for ourselves. When it comes to job hunting and finding great opportunities, we can become so fixated on obtaining that one thing that we think nothing else will do. We forget about the other possibilities that are just as good, or better. Open yourself to chance. When you explore multiple opportunities, you can see what’s out there and give yourself different options to choose from. This article was originally published on Inc.
